Huawei P40 Lite: best-buy with a good display and excellent autonomy

As per tradition, before the official announcement of the heirs of the P30 and P30 Pro, Huawei marketed the small Huawei P40 Lite, a mid-range device that anticipates the lines and shapes of the next top of the range of the Chinese company. The device arrives in Sri Lanka with a list price of 65K LKR, thus positioning itself in a very fierce range but with valid pretexts to be able to apply as an absolute best-buy. The equipment includes a Kirin 810 processor, 6GB of RAM and 128 GB of expandable internal storage, with a 6.4-inch IPS display of good quality.

This translates into excellent ergonomics, good autonomy and usability that leaves no regrets in daily use. Too bad for the absence of Google services: after the ban received by the Trump administration, Huawei had to end the collaboration relationship. This means that Huawei P40 Lite uses Android 10 in an Open Source version and relies on a series of applications created by Huawei that seek to make up for the lack of services from the Mountain View giant.

Display

Rating: 8/10 We start as usual from the analysis of the display. Huawei used a 6.4-inch diagonal panel and a resolution of 2310 x 1080 pixels with IPS LCD technology. It is a good compromise, able to guarantee very natural colors and clearly visible even in direct sunlight. In the upper left part you can see the hole necessary to install the front camera, which we will discuss later. Because of this, the biometric sensor is positioned laterally in a very comfortable position to reach with the thumb.

Design

Rating: 8/10 As also happens with most competitors, the design is the result of choice to reduce the frame to a minimum. So there are not many margins of customization, except for the rear part characterized by the presence of a photographic module with four sensors. At the bottom there is a 3.5mm aux jack, a USB-C port for charging and the mono speaker which returns a very high volume but a quality suitable for the price range.

On the side, in addition to the sensor for unlocking, we also find the volume rocker. The dimensions are 159.2 x 76.3 x 8.7 mm and three color variations are available including the eye-catching Crush Green.

Performance

Rating: 8,5 / 10 Under the body there is a Kirin 810 processor supported by 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. A hardware package capable of offering excellent performance in daily use in all sectors, from gaming to communication, through the management of mail and files. The device is always fluid, both in normal daily operations and during use with games.
We were surprised with regards to heat management: even after a rather stressful use, the effort of the processor is never felt. The 4200 mAh battery allows you to reach even more than a day of use in normal conditions, and is compatible with 40 Watt fast charging. The equipment is completed by Bluetooth 5.1, dual-band Wi-Fi ac, NFC, 3.5mm Aux Jack and USB-C port, as well as support for Dual-SIM.

Camera

Rating: 8/10 Huawei's P series has always focused on camera performance and this P40 Lite also does not contradict. In the rear the photographic module integrates four sensors: the main 48 Megapixel, the second 8 Megapixel with wide angle lens and finally two other 2 Megapixel each respectively for Macro photos and for the evaluation of the depth of field.
The main camera allows you to take excellent photos.
The main camera allows you to take excellent photos.
The quality is really excellent, with good detail and natural colors not only during the day and in optimal light conditions, but also in the evening when the night mode first appeared in the P20, it does its job very well. The same goes for the wide-angle camera, which suffers a little more in particular situations, without forcing us to have to eliminate the photo for too much grain. We were less satisfied with the Macro camera. Not that it does not return good quality, but the use in reality is rather limited and it is difficult to think of the occasions when this sensor is needed. The bokeh is good for portraits, thanks also to the algorithm with artificial intelligence, while the front camera is of a high standard: 16 Megapixel resolution for detailed and highly effective photos.

Software

Rating: 8/10 Huawei P40 Lite is based on Android 10 with customization of the EMUI 10.0.1 interface. As said at the beginning, however, Google services are missing, but there are some proprietary applications to replace the main ones. The Chinese company then developed the AppGallery, which is a store where you can find most of the applications compatible with Android and which quickly became the third most populated store dedicated to mobile devices, immediately after the App Store. and Play Store.
The AppGallery is the third most populated app store and allows you to download most applications.

Of course, those who use Google services a lot, such as Gmail, Google Drive and many others, may notice their absence, but in everyday use there are many applications that can easily replace those pre-installed on Android.

Conclusions

Rating: 8/10 P40 Lite is the best buy you don't expect. Good ergonomics, good display, excellent autonomy, nice photographic sector, excellent usability in daily use.

The list price of 65K LKR has already gone down, as however had happened with Huawei P30 Lite. On ePrice.lk you can find it today around 60K LKR, and it has already become the smartphone to beat in its price range, thanks to the excellent balance achieved by the company. Alternatives? Few, perhaps the new Galaxy A51.
